Urgent Need for Plasma

Protein Therapies Did you know that a large number of patients depend on protein therapies derived from human plasma and blood donors in Canada? Donors are required because large volumes of plasma, the liquid portion of blood are needed to treat a wide variety of diseases. For example: 1200 plasma donations are required to treat one patient with hemophilia, a bleeding disorder. 130 donations to treat one patient with primary immunodeficiency, a condition where people cannot make functional antibodies to fight infections. 900 donations are required to treat one alpha-1 patient, a disorder that affects the lungs. These therapies replace missing or defective proteins in patients with rare disorders so they can lead healthier and otherwise normal lives. They typically require on-going infusions throughout their lives as they are chronic diseases so plasma is always required.

Get Treats for Your Sweets

Halloween is just around the corner, and that means lots of candy for kids! Although chocolates and sweets are oh-so yummy, how do they affect our teeth? Bacteria in our mouth digest the sugars in candy, and produce a mild acid. This acid attacks the hard outer surface of the tooth, called the enamel. If these bacteria aren’t removed every day by brushing and flossing, the enamel gets soft and a cavity starts to form. Our recommendations? Have your child eat their candy during mealtime, when there is extra saliva that helps to wash away sugars, and keeps an even pH in their mouth. Reinforce brushing and flossing after each meal. Alternatively, instead of eating their candy, have them bring it to Reflections Dental Health Centre! From November 1-8, we will buy back Halloween candy for $1 per 1Lb.

The Thanksgiving Trap

Does this Thanksgiving scene sound familiar? Aunt Jo’s lips are moving but you aren’t listening; you’re fantasizing about five minutes alone with the Nanaimo bars on the table. You starved all day to “save up” calories in case you go overboard. Unfortunately, it’s the perfect trap for what you’re trying to prevent. I know how you feel because that was how I was on a diet, stressed out by holiday food I couldn’t escape. What’s the solution? My answer was to accept that, yes, I probably would eat more on Thanksgiving and, no, it wouldn’t “ruin everything.” I trusted that I could savor my favorite dishes without guilt and fear because I’d be satisfied with far less. I knew I didn’t need to eat everything before the Monday diet that was not going to happen. I learned to trust my body to balance out over a few days if I stuck to eating mindfully.

Author Your Own Life!

Living your life by a clearly identified set of principles you have authored guides your journey and inspires you to put your life into focus. A personal manifesto has 6-8 core statements that define how you choose to live your life on a daily basis. To offer inspiration, I will share mine: 1) Bring in as much joy, laughter, and love as humanly possible. 2) Create opportunities to appreciate beauty & gratitude daily. 3) Let love guide all my choices not allowing fear to run my life. 4) Connecting with my body daily. 5) Letting all emotions be felt, experienced, and released (including the harder ones such as anger, fear, grief, jealousy, and disappointment). 6) Cultivate and nurture community and connection. 7) A welcoming spirit to guide my decisions. Now it’s your turn to sit down, reflect upon what’s important to you, and create your own manifesto!

Clean Eating – Banana Lemon Pie

This is one of my favourite desserts. It’s also very quick (10 minutes!) and easy to prepare.

Quantity:

9” x 9” plate = 9 slices (3″ x 3″).

Ingredients:

3 cups pecans or walnuts (not soaked);
1 1/2 cups raisins;
zest from 1 lemon + 2 tablespoons lemon juice;
4 medium bananas;
poppy seeds, blueberries, raspberries, slices of colourful fruit, or sprigs of mint (optional).

Directions:

Process nuts in food processor until small bits. Add raisins to nuts in food processor and process until the mixture starts to clump together. Gently distribute mixture on a 9”x9” plate, then press firmly to form crust. Grate lemon zest on top of crust. Juice lemon into a bowl. Slice bananas 1/4″ – 1/2″ thick and put into lemon juice; stir gently to coat bananas with juice. Spread banana slices/lemon juice on crust. Optional: Decorate with poppy seeds, blueberries, raspberries, slices of colourful fruit, or sprigs of mint.

Is Your Relationship Financially Healthy?

Studies have shown that financial infidelity is on the rise, and can range from lying about small purchases, an amount of debt, or even hiding entire bank accounts. Many people put aside money for seemingly good intentions, but a lack of transparency can cause tension in a relationship, leading to mistrust, arguments and even divorce. When combining finances with a significant other, you form an agreement to manage financial issues together. It is important to open up, start a conversation, and form a financial plan. This does not mean you have to constantly monitor each dime you both spend, but you must agree upon a budgeting and money management system that works for both of you. A threshold amount must also be set, outlining how much you are allowed to spend without each others approval. If you fail to plan, then your financial plans will fail.
