Time for Tea        

Watch out coffee, tea is making a comeback! Did you know, Canadians drink almost 10 billion cups of tea each year? That’s 120 cups more than in 2006. Next to water, tea is world’s most consumed beverage! And it is projected that consumption will jump 40% by 2020! Each type of tea has its own characteristics including a different taste and differing health benefits. Green tea is the most popular type of tea with several health benefits including weight loss and anti-inflammatory properties. White teas are the most delicate of teas, with an unmatched lightness and eminence. Black tea is your “standard” tea, which is typically used when making Iced Tea. Rooibos tea, or Red Tea, is a flavorful, caffeine-free tea that has wonderful skin-loving properties. Herbal Tea and Fruit Tea, like Rooibos tea, are caffeine-free are great served cold! Preserving Fruit

Did you wonder if it’s ok to put apples and oranges together in a bowl which is sitting on your counter or table? Well, if you do have them together, then it is time to separate them. Apples and oranges stored together omit a gas that will break them down faster. The best way to store apples is in the refrigerator because warmer temperatures will shorten the life of your apples. Keep them close to 0 Celsius to extend their shelf life. Citrus is best stored in the refrigerator too. Try to avoid plastic bags because they can make your fruit moldy. Use a mesh bag or a basket so air can circulate around them. I keep a list on my fridge, of which fruits and veggies are good to store in the fridge and which are good to leave on the countertop.

Chiropractic for Golf

The Masters is one of the greatest golf events in all of professional golf. This year Jordan Spieth had an amazing run at Augusta National to win the Masters. He is an amazing athlete and it was fun to watch. After he had won the event, at the Green Jacket Ceremony, he thanked family, close friends and his “team”. He mentioned as a part of his team his Chiropractor. It was awesome to hear him mention his Chiropractor alongside his golf coach and trainer. It shows you that Jordan understands that he would not play as well without a connected nervous system, and he is not alone. In fact most of the PGA professionals are under Chiropractic care and there are Chiropractors at all of the PGA events for the golf pros to use if needed. Pretty cool huh?

Source Within

In a private session, my guides have a conversation with my client, using me as the interpreter.  No subject is off-limits.  It is very much like a counselling session but it is the guides that are doing the counselling, from a much higher place of wisdom.  One common issue I find after nine years of doing sessions is that people have a really hard time with self-judgement.  Where did we learn as a society to judge ourselves so harshly?  In order to heal, you need to be accountable for your part in your issues.  It is difficult to do so if you judge yourself critically.  A viewpoint of empathy and non-judgement from the guides is what helps many clients shift, as for the first time, they see their issues with neutrality.  We are here to learn.  It goes without saying that we would make many mistakes along our journey.

Pet Health

Fireworks can be fun for humans, and with all the summer weekends, they are inevitable. Dogs don’t always hold the same enthusiasm however. Here are some tips for helping your dog cope with Fireworks Season. Make sure your dog is wearing identification or has a microchip in case they run away. Keep your dog indoors during the fireworks, as far away as possible from the noise. Placing a thick blanket over their kennel can help muffle the sounds. Make sure the kennel is in an area where they will not over heat though. Make sure your dog is tired by the time nighttime comes and the fireworks begin. Lots of exercise may need to be done during the day. Give your dog something yummy to chew on in their kennel such as a Kong filled with goodies.

When it comes to our nutrition we often don’t think long-term. We may eat at fast food restaurants and eat unhealthy for the immediate gratification it brings us. Long-term – this is problematic for our health.  The same thing goes for our finances. We often spend our money on purchases for immediate gratification. Eating for Recovery

An often overlooked area when dealing with the injured athlete is what to eat throughout the rehabilitation period. Many patients commonly ask “are there foods that can help decrease inflammation and even possibly increase inflammation?” Surprisingly, the answer is YES! During the early stages of an injury (inflammatory phase) try 3-9 grams of fish oil, nuts, avocado or flax seed oil. Other foods that can help with inflammation are turmeric (1 tsp. 3x/day), garlic (2-4 cloves) or pineapple (1 cup). Other micronutrients that can help speed healing are Vitamin A, B, C, D as well as Calcium, Copper and Zinc to name a few. On the contrary, certain foods have an ability to increase or promote inflammation, such as vegetable oils, soybean, safflower oil and most processed foods. And remember, just because you’re laid up in bed with an injury that keeps you away from you’re activity, don’t forget to eat; Resting Metabolic Rate can increase between 15-50% during the recovery of an injury!
