How is Your Social Health?
We all know how important it is to care for our physical and mental health, but it’s also important to check in on your social health. Social health is our ability to create meaningful and rewarding relationships with other people. Feeling connected makes us feel loved and valued and this in turn has a positive effect on our health. If you’re looking to improve your social health, consider signing up for a virtual or in-person class at a senior centre. Victoria Lifeline’s GoSafe personal help button can also help you feel safe while you look for ways to stay active and connected.

Read Your LABELS!
There are so many chemicals in our everyday products that are harmful to our health and bodies. Here are a few ingredients to watch for. FRAGRANCE/PARFUM found in scented candles, perfumes, lotions and more. FORMALDEHYDE is found in shampoo & conditioner (including baby and pet varieties), body wash, sunblock, cosmetics, baby wipes, toothpaste and more. It is also present in our wood, sheetrock, and furniture. It is a known carcinogen and recognized as such by the Cancer Institute. Long term exposure or toxicity to these ingredients can lead to an increased risk of cancer. By becoming aware, we can safeguard ourselves and those we love.
The Role of Respiratory Therapists
Respiratory therapists (RTs) are healthcare professionals who assess, monitor, and treat individuals with respiratory and cardio-respiratory disorders. Respiratory therapists are important team members that provide care in hospitals, clinics, the community, and in patients’ homes. RTs provide healthcare to people at all stages of life, from newborns who are having difficulty breathing, to those who are critically ill. Most respiratory therapists work in hospitals. They handle breathing problems that can stem from conditions including COPD, Asthma, Cystic Fibrosis. You’ll find them in neonatal nurseries, operating rooms, intensive care units, general wards, and emergency departments. Many RT’s work in chronic care facility, or home care environments.
Upgrading Your Hearing Aids
In short, your hearing aids should be replaced every 3-6 years or so. Several factors may figure into whether it’s time to update your hearing instruments. They include: level and sophistication of the hearing technology; quality of upkeep and maintenance throughout use; -potential changes in your hearing ability or listening lifestyle; and condition and performance of your existing hearing devices. Hearing your best is more critical than ever in our changing world — with in-person and virtual communication both playing important roles in today’s new normal. If you think it might be time to update your hearing devices, please don’t wait.
Osteoarthritis & Exercise
1 in 6 Canadian adults has arthritis, the majority being osteoarthritis (OA). OA is a disease of the joint cartilage with multiple contributing factors including genetics, previous joint injury, body weight and muscle weakness. Pain associated with OA may cause individuals to avoid physical activity which can lead to secondary complications and worsening of symptoms. Physiotherapists are experts in exercise prescription for conditions such as OA and can help you safely engage in exercise in a way that can decrease pain, increase strength, allow continued participation in activity and possibly prolong the life of your joint.
