Seniors and Stress
Chronic stress is harmful to people of all ages, but its impact on older adults can be particularly severe, increasing the risk of age-related diseases, hastening cognitive decline, and even triggering falls. Stressors that are common amongst the elderly include loss of control, personal loss, declining health, financial worries, personal safety, and loss of independence. To reduce stress, get regular exercise, eat balanced meals to ensure the mind and body are properly fueled, and ask for help. Talking with a trusted family member, friend, or healthcare professional, at the very least, releases pent-up stress and may even lead to a solution.
Treat Your Jaw Pain
Clenching and grinding your teeth, whether during the day or at night, is the most common cause of jaw pain. Over time, the heightened muscle activity can lead to trigger points within the chewing muscles that may cause pain, soreness, limited mouth opening, and even headaches. Physiotherapy can provide effective treatment for temporomandibular dysfunction. Your therapist may use a combination of manual therapy, intra-oral massage, dry needling, and home exercises to decrease muscle tone and encourage relaxation. Try to avoid the forward head posture, common when in front of a computer, as it negatively affects the biomechanics of the jaw.
Benefits of Quitting Smoking
What happens after you quit smoking?
After 1 day: the risk of heart attack begins to decrease.
After 2 days: a person may notice a heightened sense of smell and more vivid tastes as their nerves heal.
After 1 month: in as little as one month, the person’s lung function begins to improve. As the lungs heal and get stronger, the capacity will improve. Former smokers may notice less coughing and shortness of breath, and snoring may even improve.
After 1 year: after one year of quitting, a person’s risk of coronary heart disease is reduced by half.
Weight Loss: The Real Truth
Weight loss is something that many of us are considering, so what is a safe weight loss goal? A weight loss goal of 1-2 lbs per week is sustainable and possible. The key word here is sustainable. There are lots of fad diets out there that promise and sometimes even deliver the weight loss levels promised. Weight loss is about changes that you make to both your activity levels as well as your food intake. The real equation for weight loss is the difference between calories in and calories out. It really is as simple as that.
Back-to-School Vision Care
Along with the usual back-to-school preparations, children’s vision should rank high in importance. It is not unusual for the refractive status of eyes to change up to age 18, but these changes are more likely during the early growth years. Young kids might not readily notice problems at a time when 80% of what they learn is through the eyes. In addition, eye muscle imbalances can affect reading and concentration, both of which are important for academic success and a confident student. Arrange for a professional and comprehensive oculo-visual assessment, including ocular health, for your child soon!
