Arthritis Awareness Month

September is Arthritis awareness month, and we have a few tips to help reduce the symptoms of this painful disease that affects 1 in 5 people.
1. Exercise and weight loss – Yoga is a great form of exercise that can help to loosen up the joints and reduce the stiffness and pain associated with arthritis.
2. Watch your diet – avoiding alcohol and foods high in purines will help to lessen the build up of uric acid, which causes crystals in the joints and increase pain and discomfort
3. Anti-inflammatories – Anti-inflammatories can help to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Common anti-inflammatories are Advil, Motrin and Naproxen.
4. Heat or Cold – Placing heating pads or ice packs on the joints can help to reduce inflammation and relieve joint discomfort
5. Mobility Aids – Using canes, shoe inserts, walkers, raised toilet seats, and other assistive devices can help protect joints and improve your ability to perform daily tasks.

Good Posture Can Prevent Pain & Injuries

Having good posture makes you look strong and healthy and it’s also a critical factor in preventing pain and injuries. For recreational activities like golf, skating, yoga or running, posture actually plays an important role in performance. Posture is critical in preventing workplace injuries that come from repetitive stress or sitting at a desk in front of a computer all day. Physiotherapists can help you discover how to improve your posture by demonstrating positions and stretches for when you start to feel the tension in your body. Make the move to see a physiotherapist!

Laser Therapy for Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is generally caused by progressive wear and tear on our joints that results in the breakdown of our joint cartilage. When cartilage breaks down, the bones start to grind against each other, creating inflammation in the joint. These changes are what cause you to experience painful symptoms. The degenerative process itself may not be painful, however the resulting inflammation and irritation to surrounding muscles, ligaments, and tendons usually cause you to experience uncomfortable and sometimes debilitating symptoms. Cold laser therapy offers an innovative treatment for a variety of acute and chronic, often painful, conditions like osteoarthritis.

Suicide Prevention through CBT

Mental illness—including depression and bipolar disorders—is the leading cause of suicide. People of any age can suffer from mental illness, and many may feel that there is no other way out. But there is hope. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps individuals grappling with suicidal thoughts by recognizing maladaptive thought patterns, reframing problems, and challenging the way we think about them. It also supports long-term solutions by finding alternative coping strategies. At White Dove Counselling and Mediation, we are trained in CBT, and a counselor is standing by to support you in your time of need.

Financial Health: A Pillar of Overall Wellbeing

Just as you prioritize your physical and mental health, it’s vital to focus on your financial wellbeing. FP Canada found in it’s most recent survey that 44% of Canadians say money is their biggest source of stress. Financial stress can lead to anxiety, sleeplessness, and even physical health issues. By planning, budgeting, and investing wisely, you’re not just securing your future—you’re also reducing stress, which contributes to better overall health. Think of financial wellness as another pillar of your holistic health strategy. A sound financial plan ensures you can enjoy life’s pleasures, and maintain peace of mind, ultimately enhancing your overall quality of life.
