Reversing Late-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease

This January, my dad was diagnosed with advanced late-onset Alzheimer’s disease. I wanted to find measures to delay the progress of the disease. I contacted my nephew, a neurologist, who told me there’s no treatment to reverse the condition and that all of the options are for delaying the progression. I chose the transdermal treatment because of fewer digestive adverse effects. My dad also began to take a nutritional supplement. Last month, my sister, an RN, visited Korea and found my dad’s brain function much better than the last time she saw him. Yong Han Lee, Re Vitamins of Charleswood, www.facebook.com/revitamins

To Be or To Do – That is The Question?

With fall brings a never-ending list of things to do that can throw many of us into a state of overwhelming overload. While falling asleep at night, how do you look back and measure your day? Do you reflect on how much you accomplished by checking off your list that doesn’t seem to get any smaller? What would happen if instead we sat quietly at the end of the day and reflected on the quality of our day: was I loving and compassionate with self and others? , was I mindful of the beauty around me?, did I smile and engage with life?, Did I find joy in what I was doing? The quality of my life dramatically changed once I began embodying a state of calmness and ease inside that I carried with me throughout my to do’s, operating more as a human being that a human doing. All Is Well When Your Feet Feel Good!

The pair of socks you are wearing can make a difference in how you feel during your day. Have you ever had a pair that were too tight around the calf and left an ugly red welt? Or the ones that fall down and work their way under your foot? Traditional cotton socks hold water and keep feet clammy and wet and not smelling very nice. To improve your day, wear socks that have a soft touch top and an ergonomic y-heel that keeps the heel from slipping. Look for socks that guard against blisters with moisture resistance and anti-bacterial protection. The right socks can also provide stability, support and increase balance.

Jazz Up Your Brain

Attending to your brain function is not just an alternative consideration or luxury. It is fundamental to optimal brain health. When the network of your brain neurons works in synchrony, it is like having a wonderful jazz conductor supporting the engagement of the large number of musicians in their concert band. Your body needs the master regulator to listen, improvise, and interact with your body organs so you have a fluid system responding to the challenges of the moment. Brainwave Optimization supports your brain function in a comprehensive way so you can live your life with the dynamic “call and response” paradigm of jazz. Joanne Couture, RMFT, RSW. Minimizing Whiplash

Whiplash and related soft-tissue injuries are often associated with a motor vehicle accident. To avoid whiplash, always ensure your headrest is adjusted properly to help reduce the distance between the back of the head and the headrest, which stops the neck from bending back. Make sure the top of the headrest is at least level with the top of your head. Position the headrest so it’s as close to the back of your head as possible. You may need to adjust the back of the seat as well. Be sure your passengers adjust their headrests too. Safe travels! Doug Treloar, BMR, PT Physio First Clinic, PhysioFirstClinic.ca

The Not-So-Great Outdoors

Many cat owners feel guilty about keeping their cats inside and worry they are depriving them of natural instincts. Generally speaking, a cat that spends his entire life indoors will live many years longer than a cat restricted to the outdoors. On top of the parasites and potentially fatal diseases it can contract (including feline leukemia and feline AIDS), your outdoor cat is always at risk of being struck by a vehicle. It’s a myth that going outside is a requirement for feline happiness. Playing regularly with cats and providing them with entertaining toys can easily satisfy their stalking instinct, keep them stimulated, and provide the exercise they need to stay healthy and happy. What is Tuina Massage?

Tuina Massage Therapy makes use of rhythmic compression techniques in different energy channels of the body to establish a harmonious flow of Qi (bio-energy). Tuina uses various hand techniques in combination with acupressure and other manipulation methods. In Tuina massage, that often focuses on the deeper layer muscle and connective tissues. This massage removes the blockages and keeps the energy moving through the meridians, as well as through the muscles and joints. The best part about it is that it relaxes as well as energizes. Tuina is a very effective therapy for stiff neck, sore back, arthritis, sciatica, and muscle aches and spasms. It also helps with stress-related disorders like insomnia, indigestion, and headaches. Japanese Thermal Therapy for Joints

Arthritis is that moment when you are chasing your grandchild, and you stop because that pain goes off again in your knee. As we age, our joints naturally begin to age too. Ganban-yoku, a Japanese natural thermal therapy, is recommended for arthritis because of its unique ability to stimulate our body’s healing mechanisms through non-invasive heat. Stone beds warm your body evenly, promoting healing from the inside out, while maintaining gentle lower temperatures. This is what leads to increased blood circulation for your body to heal, especially when repairing inflamed joints. Mieko Morisawa, Pocca Poca Spa, PoccaPocaSpa.com

Have You Had Your Probiotic Today?

Probiotics play a key role in the body by improving gastrointestinal functions, enhancing immunity, regulating hormones, protecting us from food-borne illnesses, controlling overgrowth of bad bacteria, and assisting in vitamin production & nutrient absorption. Here’s what to look for in your probiotic:
1. High culture count – Culture count refers to the total amount of live bacterial cultures in a single serving i.e. 50 Billion cfu (colony forming units)
2. Number of strains – There are over a thousand strains of beneficial bacteria in the gut. Look for multiple strains of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria.
3. Make sure the capsule is designed to protect probiotics – Enteric coated capsules remain intact throughout the harsh stomach environment and begin dissolving in the intestine where the pH is more alkaline.
All of these factors can be found in the Ultimate Flora line of probiotics by Renew Life.
