Sun Safety – Did You Know?

Summer may be winding to a close, but it’s still really important to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet A & B rays! You might think the chance of getting a sunburn on cloudy days is less, but the sun’s damaging UV light can pass through clouds.

Not only are we at risk of sunburns, which are uncomfortable, other problems can occur along with sunburn, such as heatstroke or other heat related illnesses from too much sun exposure, allergic reactions to the sun, sunscreens products or certain medications, vision problems such as eye dryness and burning, decreased vision or even partial vision loss. Not to mention the possibility of long-term issues such as skin changes or skin cancer.

Did you know that you are more likely to get a sunburn between 11 a.m. in the morning and 3 p.m.? That is when the sun’s rays are the strongest.

Did you know that it’s easier to get sunburned at higher altitudes? That’s because there’s less of the earth’s atmosphere to block the sunlight. UV exposure increases in elevation.

Did you know that the closer you are to the equator, the more direct sunlight passes through the atmosphere?

People with lighter skin are generally prone to sunburns, but darker skinned people can also burn so it is important to always protect your skin and eyes from the sun, don’t stay in the sun too long and use sunscreen and wear clothing that covers your skin whenever possible!

Disability Tax Credit Eligibility

The Disability Tax Credit (DTC) eligibility hinges on three primary impairment categories, each with its own criteria: Physical Impairments. Mental Illness and Psychological Impairments. Neurological Impairments. Simply having a certified medical condition within these categories doesn’t guarantee DTC eligibility. Qualification depends on impairment severity and its impact on “Activities of Daily Living.”

September Days of Recognition

The long summer days are winding down, students have or will soon be headed back to school, and the leaves are soon going to start to change colour as we welcome September. A month that starts and ends with important days of recognition! Labour Day on September 4th is a Federal Statutory Holiday which officially celebrates workers and the labour union movement. And the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th which honours the children who never returned home from, as well as the survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities.

At the Golden Circle we acknowledge the Indigenous traditional territories represented by Treaty 6 and 7 as the land the Golden Circle is situated on and pay tribute to the many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples whose footsteps have marked these lands for centuries. A goal of the Golden Circle is to respect and work together with Indigenous and Métis peoples in building a welcoming and inclusive community and we want to especially highlight the importance of September 30th.

Community Announcement

DID YOU KNOW: September is Recovery Month in Canada. Since 2012, a network of people in recovery, families, service providers, and entire communities have come together to celebrate RECOVERY

WHY IS RECOVERY DAY IMPORTANT
Thousands of individuals are affected by substances use disorder and may never receive the support they need, leaving hundreds of Canadians to die each month. While there is no cure for addiction, there is a solution. Together we build awareness, challenge societal Stigma, and above all else show our community that recovery is real, attainable and sustainable.

WHAT IS STIGMA
The stigma around substance use is one of the biggest barriers for people seeing and receiving treatment for addiction. Stigma is often displayed in the forms of discriminatory attitudes and beliefs, and behaviours. Stigma is a significant barrier to getting help for those with a substance use disorder, or who have used substances in the past. As a society, the words we use to describe people and their health conditions influence and reflect our attitudes and approaches to helping them. Language evolves and continuously adapts to respond to changes in society’s values and understanding of oppression in our culture.

International studies by the World Health Organization show that people with alcohol and drug use disorders are among some of most stigmatized individuals of all health conditions.

NATIONAL STATISTICS SHOW

3.3 Million people die each year due to the harmful use of Alcohol.
35,000 people die from alcohol and drug use disorders.
Only 14% of people who meet the criteria for a drug use disorder receive
Any treatment for it.

Yardwork Services

Services include lawn cutting, fall cleanup of leaves, gardening, flower beds and weeding. As with all of our services we can provide as much or as little based on what your needs are. We can also do small hedge trimming and pruning. As always if cost is a barrier we will work with you to overcome that barrier. During spring and fall we can also do outside window cleaning and eaves cleaning as well.

Grocery Delivery Program

Regardless of age, we all need to eat. But those groceries can be heavy, and the store can be busy and loud. Or you might not have time for it amidst all your other appointments and obligations. So let us shop on your behalf by joining our grocery program. Our members can phone or e-mail us on Monday and provide us with a detailed shopping list and a store to go to. We will buy what you need and deliver it to you. We can even buy non-food items like yarn or cutlery. And you’re not obligated to order every week. Some people even only order once to get that item from a store that’s too far from home. But slots are limited (another reason why our volunteers are so important) so contact us for more information.

September is Arthritis Awareness Month

According to Stats Canada over 37% of Canadians over the age of 20 have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis, mainly affecting hips and knees. This is the wear and tear condition due to breakdown of cartilage between the joints leading to pain and stiffness. Along with typical Naturopathic treatments, another beneficial treatment modality is Cold Laser, which uses light wavelengths to stimulate new energy production leading to restoration of normal function by increasing blood flow, nervous stimulation, and new cell growth. These treatments are non-invasive, painless and can be done a few times a week to stimulate that healing process.

Volunteers Needed!

Here at Saskatoon Services for Seniors we strive to make a difference every day. We do this by helping seniors to remain in their own homes safely for as long as possible. The fall season offers our very popular Yard Work and Gardening programs. We encourage anyone with a heart of gold who likes working outdoors to volunteer so that seniors in our community can keep their yards and gardens looking beautiful now that winter has finally receded. If you or someone you know would be interested in helping seniors in our community, please contact our office today. All help is greatly appreciated.

Osteoarthritis & Exercise

1 in 6 Canadian adults has arthritis, the majority being osteoarthritis (OA). OA is a disease of the joint cartilage with multiple contributing factors including genetics, previous joint injury, body weight and muscle weakness. Pain associated with OA may cause individuals to avoid physical activity which can lead to secondary complications and worsening of symptoms. Physiotherapists are experts in exercise prescription for conditions such as OA and can help you safely engage in exercise in a way that can decrease pain, increase strength, allow continued participation in activity, and possibly prolong the life of your joint.
