Effects of Concussions on Vision

When someone has a head injury, they typically have vision problems that can be temporary or permanent. When a vision problem is causing or contributing to a problem with reading, balance, or movement, the recovery process will move slowly until the vision component is treated. Some symptoms might disappear after a while, such as eye pain or headaches, and yet other symptoms may remain, such as blurred or double vision, or vice versa. If you suspect that a concussion has caused vision problems resulting in difficulty coping with daily activities, see a developmental optometrist for a visual evaluation.

We question ourselves everyday if we’re OK, as good health supersedes everything. Your Immune System is charged with maintaining good health but sometimes fails. It’s a daily serving of extra immunity, giving your Immune System more capacity to better do its job of getting and keeping you healthy.

Massage for a Healthy Heart

Massage therapy helps patients with cardiac issues address some of the factors that may be contributing to their condition. When a person experiences a painful or stressful event, the brain releases the hormones cortisol and adrenaline. These chemicals prepare the body to fight or run away from dangerous situations. The body responds by tensing muscles, shortening the breath, and increasing the heart rate. Without relief, long-term stress or chronic pain will weaken the heart muscle. Combined with less-than-healthy lifestyle choices, these factors can lead to heart disease. Massage therapy helps to induce physical and mental relaxation, loosen tight muscles and increase blood flow, alleviate chronic pain and reduce anxiety.

Strive for Independence After Amputation

Immediately after your amputation, it is normal to seek out and receive assistance from family members or friends to help you during this transition. However, at some point, the sooner the better, you should strive to become as independent again as possible. With a comfortably fitting and properly functioning prosthesis, you should be able to do many, if not all of the things you did before becoming an amputee. Talk with your Prosthetist about your goals. Setting short and long term goals is a great way to see positive outcomes and at the same time regain your independence.

Get Energized!

Boost your pre or post-workout by incorporating chlorophyll-rich greens with coconut MCT into your daily routine. Studies have shown when taken before exercising, coconut MCT may reduce lactic acid buildup and encourage the body to burn more fat instead of carbs for energy. This can be found in a greens powder formula at your health food store and added to smoothies or water. Taking it in the morning can also make you feel more energized throughout the day. Look for a greens product with coconut MCT and maca for sustained energy, plus shelf-stable probiotics included to lighten your supplement load!

70 is the New 50

Working into retirement, postponing having kids, living longer – the lifecycle of Canadians is changing. This has implications on personal finances and retirement savings. New research suggests that old age now starts at 74, with middle age lasting at least nine years longer than current estimates. What we think of as old has changed over time and it will need to continue changing in the future as people live longer, healthier lives. Two hundred years ago, a 60-year-old was a very old person. Someone who is 60 years old today could be argued as middle aged. In terms of health, longevity, and view of life, “baby boomers” in their sixties and seventies will be more like their parents and grandparents were at 50. This means people can work longer if they so desire. For many people, 70 is the new 50 and signifies the quiet revolution that has taken place in longevity.

Spring is the Season of Love
Spring

When the weather warms up, so does our heart. Why is that? Science of course. Spring is a season of cliches — birds singing, bees buzzing and people falling madly in love. All this love can be blamed on one very real thing – dopamine! Every April your brain unintentionally becomes a dopamine factory, turning you into a love junkie. Dopamine is a naturally occurring chemical your brain uses to make you want things. There are other systems involved in love, but when it comes to new love, dopamine is the main culprit. And with enough of it swirling around your system, you’re prone to fall in love — and fall hard.
