Helping Seniors Recover after a Heart Attack

With advancements in medicine, more people are surviving heart attacks, and that’s great news. However, about a quarter of seniors feel depressed, afraid, and angry after going through a heart attack, and they need their loved ones. You can help by visiting often (keeping visits short at first) and being encouraging regarding lifestyle and diet changes. Making the same changes to your own lifestyle and diet is a great way to be encouraging and benefit your own health, while helping to ensure that the person who experienced the heart attack doesn’t feel resentful.

Spring is Coming!

For those of us who tend to hibernate during the cold winter months, Spring is the time that we wake up and feel ready to attempt all those upkeep jobs that we put off in the fall. Cleaning up the yard, repairing that broken fence post, cleaning out the rain gutters. However, before starting any strenuous activity, particularly after months of relative inactivity, a good warm up is key. Before trying to pull out that fence post, make sure to walk for a few minutes first to warm up your muscles. Follow this up with some light stretches to ensure that you are loose and ready to work. This will help to reduce that chance of pulled muscles, or even worse injuries.

Best Way to Eat Fruits

Did you know that by simply adding more whole fruits to your diet you can rejuvenate your cells? However, fruits should be avoided after a meal because eaten on top of a full meal, fruit will lead to the excess intake of glucose as well as indigestion. If you eat fruit 30-40 minutes before a meal, it will help to prevent excess intake of carbohydrates, such as rice or bread, during the meal. Fruits are best eaten 30 minutes to 1 hour after drinking a full glass of water each morning.

Trust Your Gut
Healthy Gut

Your immune system works hard to protect you from injury, illness, and disease. This process usually involves inflammation, a natural response to stress, tissue damage, and harmful stimuli like viruses, bacteria, and toxins. Inflammation functions similarly to an engine warning light, alerting you to the presence of a problem through symptoms such as heat, pain, redness, swelling, and/or loss of function. 85% of the immune system is located in our gut. An anti-inflammatory diet rich in vitamins A, C, and E and the mineral selenium provides your gut with the ingredients it needs to bolster immunity and achieve optimal mental and physical health.

Senior Strength Training

Strength training is good for balance, immune function, cardiovascular health, bone health, and more, and it’s never too late to start building muscle. Sedentary adults over the age of 50 lose an average of .4 pounds of muscle mass a year, which adds up over time. For seniors, establishing a new strength-training program should be done under the care of an experienced trainer who understands the issues people face as they age, including loss of balance, and can make modifications during weight lifting sessions. In general, seniors should train about three days per week and add more weight when it’s no longer hard to lift the weight they’ve been using.

Feel Supported

Amputees all have something in common. Going through daily life as a new amputee can be a challenge and everyone deals with it differently. A great way to help with the adjustment is to meet with other amputees who have gone through or are going through what you are. Whether it’s about dealing with daily struggles, getting back to work, or rekindling interest in recreational activities, meeting and talking with other amputees who are in a similar situation is a great way to feel supported, reassuring you that you’re not alone. Essential Oil Review: Cajeput

Cajeput 100% Pure Joy Naturals essential oil is also known as White Tea Tree. The name Cajeput is actually the Indonesian word for ‘white wood’. This camphorous essential oil is part of the Melaleuca family and is used much in the same way as its cousin, Tea Tree. Fresh and Uplifting and a must have for treating colds and flu. (Essential Oils Natural Remedies, Althea Press) This would be an excellent oil to use in your diffuser. Add 4-5 drops to your diffuser and “Just Breathe”.
