Giving Back: Manitoba ALS

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease or Motor Neuron Disease (MND) is a fatal, rapidly progressive neuromuscular disease that affects approximately 3,000 Canadians and more than 289 Manitobans. Over the past twelve years, the Manitoba Walks for ALS have raised over $1.5 Million dollars to help support Research, Client Services and Education for Manitobans living with ALS/MND. Last year’s event in Winnipeg was a huge success with more than 1600 people participating, helping to raise over $210,000. This year’s goal is $250,000. Visit our website to register as an individual, team or just sponsor someone in the walk on June 20. Your donations allow the ALS Society of Manitoba to lend equipment and learning resources, and to offer services such as support groups, client services coordination, caregiver days, and more.

Clutter Busting 101

Excessive clutter causes stress and often accompanies underlying health problems. Conditions like depression and chronic pain can make cleaning seem impossible, but small daily steps add up to big changes over time and boost feelings of wellness. Pick up as you go- check the room you’re in for items you can bring with you. Sort mail daily- pay and file bills, recycle newspapers/flyers, respond to and delete emails. Get rid of something old/unused/unworn with each new purchase that enters your home.

Break up large tasks- just do one shelf/cabinet/room at a time. If it’s smelly, sticky, empty, broken, looks weird, is expired, or covered in dust just get rid of it- you won’t miss it! Using baskets to de-clutter dressers/tables/counters helps your home appear tidier and makes cleaning quicker and easier. Enlist help from your kids, spouse or professionals.

Spotlight: Tutor Doctor

About 10 years ago, we had a simple idea and a desire to make a difference. We wondered….

What if a tutor could come directly to the child’s home to deliver tutoring services instead of fragmenting a family’s precious time together by forcing parents to act as “taxi drivers”?

What if there was flexibility in the tutor’s schedule so that tutoring time slots could be scheduled to accommodate for a family’s busy schedule? What if a struggling child could get one on one attention instead of being limited to the “one-to-many” teaching models used by most extra-curricular learning centers? What if a tutor could develop a personalized program by working with the child’s existing homework and school curriculum instead of loading more on an already overwhelmed child?

What if average families could get access to top tutoring resources sometimes reserved only for wealthier families? We found the answer…Tutor Doctor!

Shoulder Pain?

What do you do when your anti-inflammatories don’t take care of your shoulder pain? Often, a diagnosis such as “tendonitis” is the source of your symptoms however it is rarely the cause. So if your shoulder pain returns when going off the meds, possibly looking at muscle imbalances around your shoulder blade or your overall mid-back mobility might be the key to getting your rotator cuff tendons to be less inflamed. With our patients, we often use the analogy of brand new tires on your vehicle. If you don’t get the wheel alignment checked, you will always wear out the front left tire. Our Physiotherapist, Athletic Therapist and Sport Medicine Doctor will help address your alignment so you don’t wear out your front left wheel!

Everyone Has a Slice of Genius

YES, everyone has a slice of genius! There is a problem attached to it! Your slice of genius does not fit in with the status quo. Your slice of genius does not fit in with social norms and expectations. Your slice of genius does not fit in with the opinions of most if not all your family and friends. Your slice of genius is a slice from a different pie! It’s yours! You own it! You can do with it what you want. A slice is like a wedge. You can use your slice of genius as a wedge that wedges The DOOR of OPPORTUNITY open so you can jump into your world of GREATNESS. You can also show and share your slice of genius with people who don’t understand and they will devour it nibble by nibble as they try to fit you INTO their mold, their perception of the world and confined by their limiting beliefs. So what’s it going to be? What are you going to do with your slice? Do you know what your slice is? If not, do you have a strategy to discover it? The QUALITY of your life is determined by what you do with your slice. As the saying goes – “Life’s a slice!”

Chemicals in Drinking Water

Chlorine is essentially bleach. And what comes out of most municipally delivered faucets is quite actually, a mild bleach solution. Is it healthy to drink bleach? Does your body require any certain amount of chlorine to remain healthy? Feel free to consult a physician on that somewhat rhetorical question.

The contamination of water is directly related to the degree of contamination of our environment. Rainwater flushes airborne pollution from the skies, and then washes over the land before running into the, rivers, aquifers, and lakes that supply our drinking water. Liquid chlorine is mixed into drinking water and swimming pools to destroy bacteria. The good news is, you don’t have to drink it anymore. The most practical and efficient method for removing chlorine, chlorine by-products, and taste and odor problems, is to filter it with granular activated carbon (GAC) or other suitable chemical-removing filter media, such as KDF.
