The Link Between Depression & Hearing Loss

Research continues to prove a strong connection between hearing loss and depression. The two are referred to as invisible conditions, as you cannot see their effects at first glance. Because of this, their effects can often go unacknowledged, unrecognized, and untreated. Hearing loss affects one’s ability to communicate, which can cause stress, fatigue, social isolation, and, in turn, depression. Along with depression, clients with untreated hearing loss are known to experience anxiety, relationship problems, low self-esteem, stress, and other negative emotions. However, hearing aids have been found to help combat these issues. A study by the National Council on the Aging (NCOA) found that those with untreated hearing loss were more likely to report depression, anxiety, and paranoia, and they were less likely to participate in organized social activities compared to those who wear hearing aids. Relieve Anxiety with Reflexology

Reflexology is a therapy used to relieve tension and promote wellness. In Reflexology, reflex points on the feet, hands, and head are stimulated by acupressure which in turn reflex to corresponding parts of the body thereby helping to restore its natural energy flow. It also, promotes homeostasis, which is the balancing of a person’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. One of the most common benefits of reflexology therapy is a reduction of stress and anxiety because the hormonal glandular reflex points are activated via acupressure. Additionally, it can help to increase blood flow to the extremities, decrease blood pressure and slow down the heart rate. Reflexology therapy is relaxing and feels soothing and is a natural treatment enhancing well-being in a multifaceted way. Therese Anderson Natural Health

Primary Immune Deficiency (PID)

Most of us are blessed with good health including a normal immune system that can help the body fight infections. Primary immunodeficiency diseases (PID), where the immune system is impaired, is a set of rare chronic diseases. PID patients are susceptible to infections if untreated. Fortunately, with proper medical care, many patients live full and independent lives by undergoing antibody replacement therapy. If you are 18-65 years, in good health and >110 pounds, you may be able to help these individuals through a blood or plasma donation. Over 1000 healthy donors are required to contribute to a plasma pool, that is separated using special fractionation processes into what is called Immune Globulin Intravenous (IGIV). This product contains, IgG, a key component of the immune system that is required to fight infections. When infused into PID patients monthly, they can lead normal lives. www.prometic.com

Natural Remedy for Thick Hair

Did you know that regular use of castor oil might stimulate and increase hair growth, reduce and prevent breakage, and condition and moisturize the hair and scalp? Castor oil is a humectant, meaning it attracts and retains moisture to the skin and hair. The antibacterial and anti-fungicidal properties of ricinoleic acid in castor oil protects the scalp against hair loss, while making hair stronger, smoother, and less frizzy. To use, dilute the castor oil with another oil (think argan, coconut, or sweet almond). Castor oil is very thick, which can make it hard to apply. Warm the oils and start with damp, but not wet hair. Massage your head with your fingertips using small, circular motions. Use your fingers to comb your hair; this helps distribute the oil. For best results, treat yourself to castor oil twice a week.

Water After a Massage

First off, kneading and working the muscles gets fluid pumping out of soft tissue and into your circulatory system, where it is directed towards the kidneys. You need to replenish all that water, by drinking more water! Secondly, when muscles are tight, the circulation in that area is compromised. When massage releases that tension, and allows for nitrogenous metabolic waste to dump into the system (toxins), drinking water provides your kidneys with fluid to effectively eliminate that waste. Water plays a vital role in nearly every bodily function. Lack of water can cause fatigue, an increase in appetite, mental fogginess, and much more. Water makes up the majority of our body composition. If we want our body to run properly, we need to feed it the essentials, and proper nutrition. Drink water. Take care of your body, it’s the only place you have to live in.

Rethink Your Drink

Just because it isn’t soda, doesn’t mean it’s not packed full of sugar! The following are drinks commonly considered to be healthy options but really aren’t: 1. Fruit Juice – If you’re trying to cut your sugar intake, stay far away! 1 cup of fruit punch, for example, can have up to 38 grams of sugar!! Try adding pieces of fruit into your water for a subtle flavor, such as lemon or berries. 2. Energy Drinks – Even though they usually don’t contain a ton of calories, an 8-ounce serving can run you more than 25 grams of sugar—and no, they aren’t healthy just because they’re fortified with B vitamins. If you need a boost, stick to coffee with a natural sweetener. 3. Tonic Water – If you think a “gin and tonic” is a healthy option, you’ve been misguided. Twelve ounces of tonic water adds a whopping 32 grams of sugar to your glass (that’s eight teaspoons). Try soda water instead!

Drink to Your Health

Known as the “Immortal Health Elixir” by the Chinese and originating in the Far East around 2,000 years ago, kombucha is a beverage with tremendous health benefits. With more literature being published regarding its effectiveness in weight management, immune system enhancement as well as its role in improving digestion, and boosting energy, the fondness of this ancient drink is growing. It’s also beneficial for protecting hair and teeth and battling certain types of cancer.   Exactly what is kombucha? Simply put, kombucha is a living drink. It’s made by fermenting tea, sugar, and the kombucha culture otherwise known as a SCOBY (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast). After being fermented, kombucha becomes carbonated and contains vinegar, b-vitamins, enzymes, probiotics, and a high concentration of acid (acetic, gluconic and lactic), which are linked with positive effects. Some outcomes are improved digestion, weight loss, increased energy, cleansing and detoxification, immune support, reduced joint pain, and cancer prevention.

Foot Health: Ingrown Toe Nails

Onychocryptosis, also known as an ingrown nail is a common disorder most commonly found on the big toe. It is a painful condition usually accompanied with inflammation, later symptoms are the growth of skin tissue around the edge of the nail and sometimes yellowish drainage may appear. If neglected, infection can occur, leading to extreme swelling and an abscess which would require surgical treatment. Ingrown toenails can be prevented by wearing proper footwear and by obtaining proper nail care. It is important when trimming toenails to cut straight across and to avoid cutting them too short. You are at a higher risk of complications from an ingrown toenail if you have diabetes or other conditions that cause poor circulation. Ingrown toenails that aren’t infected can normally be treated at home. However, if your toenail has pierced the skin, or there is any sign of infection, seek medical treatment.
