Feeling Dizzy?

Complaints of dizziness are very common. 35% of persons over 40 and 80% of persons over 65 have experienced some amount of dizziness.

The most common single cause of dizziness is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. As the name implies, this is a room spinning feeling that is intermittent, related to your head position and is not a progressive disease process. What happens is that crystals from one part of the inner ear move to another part of the inner ear and press on cells that send the message to the brain that your head is moving, when in fact it is not. No medication will help this, BUT there is a physical treatment technique that can be very effective in providing quick relief of the symptoms.

So I recommend that if you experience vertigo, see your Doctor to confirm there is no serious cause, and then do not settle for the “it’s part of aging, I just have to put up with it” approach. A consult with a physiotherapist with experience treating “dizzy people” may be very helpful.

Back Problems?

If your back is bothering you consistently, at work, at home in recreation…you may be moving wrong, or just not moving enough!

Four great strategies to ‘get up, and get moving’ are:

  • Do easy stretches at work;  Get out of your chair, do some simple lunges in place; keeping the back straight and the movement always comfortable.
  • Try a yoga or Pilate’s class; get educated as to what you can do on your own. Learn the proper technique as to prevent injury and strengthen your core.
  • Lastly, dust off those weights, grab some walking/ski poles and get out in the snow for a hike; the uneven ground will challenge you and get you moving!

Suicidal thoughts…to New Life!

Several years ago, I realized I hit bottom. That moment was a wake-up call and I got help! I was feeling disrespected in every aspect of my life and it took me a while to figure it out. Over time, I have discovered that I had been paying a heavy price for being “too nice!” Dr. Phil refers to this as “Going along to get along”. Beyond getting psychiatric care, I found myself in a yoga class with a wonderful instructor.

Thanks to Kim Meades, I was introduced to Huna Kane Massage. Huna Kane loosely translates from Hawaiian into ‘inner knowing of the higher self’. As I became friends with myself and honoured my thoughts and feelings, I got stronger and stronger. I opened my own Huna Kane practice and now help others who had been lost on the ‘journey of self’. Since 1999, I have also added hypnotherapy and psychosomatic (body-mind) therapy to my list of offerings. The truth is, my greatest problems have transformed me into the person I am today – healthy, happy, and, vibrantly alive.

Intuitive Abilities

Do you have a history of Anxiety? Have you had any unusual Spiritual or Religious experiences?

Do you have a family history of Psychic Phenomena? Do you have any history of Brain Trauma?

According to Dr. Daniel G. Amen, one of the foremost leaders in brain imaging, of the Amen Clinics in the US, in their research, they have observed that there are certain parts of the brain that are associated with these symptoms, especially psychic phenomena and if you are able to answer YES to three or more of the questions, there is a high likelihood that you have strong intuitive abilities.  Being so connected to Spirit can offer great peace once you learn how to manage and understand these abilities.  Consider seeking out experts and like-minded individuals to help you explore your natural gifts.

Slow Food for Fast-Paced Living

Rawnata is a modern twist on the Latin name “renate”, which means “reborn”. Rawnata focuses on utilizing raw flax, hemp, and chia seeds. No flour. No additives. No preservatives. No empty calories. Just raw, organic seeds and other nutrient-dense, purposeful, vegan ingredients to renew and energize you.

A dozen years ago, company founder Natalie Dueck was a mother of four young children who was plagued by constipation, rashes, lethargy, and allergies. Incorporating whole grains into her diet made such a positive difference to her health that she just had to share her newfound knowledge with others – and so in 2003 she began The Bread Lady booth at the St. Norbert Farmers Market. Concerned about the growing need of customers for quality gluten-free, organic, raw, and vegan products, she introduced raw, flour-less Flax Crackers to her customers in 2009. In 2011, her innovative Chocolate Hemp Snackers won a $15,000 product development prize, which led to the development of the Rawnata brand, which she is passionate about.

Currently, three varieties of Hemp Snackers and six varieties of Flax Crackers are available. Rawnata’s online store will be launching early in 2015.

Diabetes Care

Did you know that diabetes in older people are different in some ways compared to younger people and should be managed differently?

Diabetes care in the later years can be challenging due to multiple health conditions, limited mobility and frailty. Some people have longstanding diabetes with complications that need a step-by step approach and management plan. Newly diagnosed elderly and their families often feel overwhelmed and frustrated. “I visit my patients in their homes, facilitate, educate and help families who are new to taking care of a loved one’s diabetes.” says Mathilda Prinsloo, Certified Diabetes Educator and Senior Care Practitioner. “Patients begin to flourish when their diabetes is managed properly, their families feel less burdened and more confident to assist an older loved one with diabetes.”

If you are a senior with poorly controlled diabetes or an adult child who feels frustrated with the situation, there are ways to better your situation.

Why Do Our Backs Fail?

This is a question often asked in our clinic and we commonly have two answers for our patients. Backs become injured when a high load (weight) is imposed on our back that exceeds its ability to deal with the single time lift. This would be the “push the car out of rut” example.

The other is repetitive stressors to our spine that have very light loads (weight) with little to no recovery between repetitions that cause the back to fail over time. This example being a worker who works at a pen factory and has to pick up a pen every 20 seconds to put it back on the conveyor belt. Both are equally harmful to your spine!

The fix? Strong core muscles and how fast those muscles respond!
