Are you feeling afraid, isolated, and desperate for connection? Try connecting with friends and family through online platforms like Zoom, Facetime, or Whatsapp. Although we have the limits of social distancing and the request to self-isolate, this gives us an opportunity to connect with our loved ones to a greater degree. Too often we get too busy with our lives that we do not spend the time so essential to building our closest relationships. Finding ways to rejuvenate your relationship with your loved ones is such an important aspect for self-care, and for loving connectedness that builds resilience in such uncertain times.
Increase the Power of Your Smile
With handshakes and hugs off limits, increase the power of your smile! Good oral hygiene is key to a smart smile, but sometimes it’s not enough to create the brilliance you desire. Now is the time to consider teeth whitening. Whitening uses peroxide to break down stains over time. The higher the concentration, the less time and applications are needed. A professional strength product applied for 5-10 days is ideal for most smiles and causes limited sensitivity. Stay Strong Nanaimo!
Everybody knows how important fresh air and exercise are to our physical and mental health, but as we fight the spread of COVID-19, please remember to practice physical distancing while visiting Nanaimo’s parks and trails. That means staying 2 metres (6 feet) away from those who are not part of your household. Go single file when you pass others on a path or trail and only come out if you are well. Stay strong, Nanaimo! We will get through this together. For the latest information on COVID-19, visit www.bccdc.ca or www.nanaimo.ca.

Ask The Expert
Q: My glasses keep fogging up because of the face mask I’m using. Is there any way to make this better?
A: There’s no magic fix to this. You can try obtaining anti-fog lens treatments or try coating your lenses with a bit of soapy water and letting them dry before you put on the mask. Some masks allow for a tight fit on the bridge to prevent breath from going upwards, or perhaps your mask can be vented downwards. You may need to get your frame adjusted to allow proper ventilation.
Ease Cold Symptoms Naturally
When you’re stuffed up, have a cough/sore throat, and are just feeling fatigued in general, you can look to a natural remedy to help ease your symptoms – essential oils! Not only are essential oils a great way to treat your symptoms, but they can also sometimes shorten the duration of your cold. Eucalyptus oil can be used to help ease breathing by clearing congestion, and camphor oil can help treat any aches and pains. Tea tree oil is a great disinfectant for surfaces and the air, and lavender and chamomile oils can help you get some sleep!
Should you Bring Mom or Dad Home?
If you have a parent who is in hospital, lives in a retirement home or in a long-term care facility, you may be asking yourself, “would Mom or Dad be safer staying at home with me temporarily?” Families across the country are struggling with this dilemma. Given the challenges of preventing disease transmission, some experts are recommending that seniors who can stay elsewhere should do so. If you want to bring a senior parent home temporarily but you’re worried about how you’ll provide the level of care they need, consider home health care services.
