The Ideal Protein Protocol

Data shows that 70% of Americans and 54% of Canadians are overweight or obese. These individuals are at increased risk for a host of health complications associated with excess weight, including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis and reproductive problems in women. The Ideal Protein Protocol is a four-phase, low carbohydrate, moderate protein, ketogenic weight management solution. Dr. Rothrock, Ideal Protein Chief Medical Officer, is passionate about the Ideal Protein Protocol. “This appointment affords me an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of millions affected by the epidemic,” he says. “It’s the science and education behind it that makes it different. It has been found that the Protocol is an effective intervention to help people manage their weight and potentially avoid serious health complications related to obesity.” Healthcare practitioners offer the Protocol to their patients to help them lose weight and, as a result, reverse metabolic syndrome.

Children and Financial Health

Are you ready to give your kids “the talk”? Many families struggle to teach their children about money management and financial health. A parent is the primary source for a child’s financial education, but most are reluctant to give the “money talk”, as they fear their own personal financial situations make them a poor role model. To open a discussion about finance, allow children to be responsible for saving and spending their own money. A small allowance and piggy bank provide opportunities to start learning about long-term financial stability. Together, you can learn how to save for a goal, balance income and expenses, budget purchases, and learn about the effects of interest. It is never too late for parents to set a positive example and nurture positive financial techniques. Take the first step towards a healthier future for you and your family by seeking help from a financial advisor.

Essential Oils for Oil Pulling

While many allopathic health practitioners probably give oil pulling little credence, it has long been an important part of the holistic system of medicine originating in India 3,000 to 5,000 years ago, called Ayurveda. Ayurvedic oral health practices include chewing woody stems of certain plants and eating specific herbs, as well as oil pulling. Original practitioners of oil pulling would use sunflower and sesame oils, while coconut and olive oil have gained popularity recently as well. Typically, one or a combination of these oils would be held or swished in the mouth for several minutes and then spat out and disposed of. The intention is to reduce buildup of oil soluble toxins from the mouth, as well as draw them out from the body. If your oil pulling routine has become a bit boring, consider adding one drop of pure therapeutic grade essential oil, such as peppermint or wild orange!

Chocolate and Cholesterol

Habitual chocolate eaters welcome a host of benefits for their hearts, including lower blood pressure, lower “bad” LDL cholesterol, and a lower risk of heart disease. One of the reasons dark chocolate is especially heart-healthy is its inflammation-fighting properties, which reduce cardiovascular risk. Chocolate contains a lot of saturated fat, but it is largely stearic acid, which doesn’t boost cholesterol levels. Even a daily ounce or so of milk chocolate doesn’t appear to harm cholesterol levels, although it does add fat and sugar to your diet! Researchers from San Diego State University conducted a small controlled study illustrating that eating dark chocolate has positive effects in lowering blood sugar levels and “bad” cholesterol levels and increasing “good” cholesterol levels – all of which could have positive effects on heart health.

Ask The Expert

Q: I know it’s dangerous to look at the solar eclipse. Would it be OK just to wear sunglasses to view it?

A: Vancouver Island is probably the very best place in Canada to see the solar eclipse on August 21, so I understand your enthusiasm. It won’t be a total eclipse from where we are. As such, looking at the sun at this time has the potential to cause eye damage, not just from ultra-violet light, but also from other wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation, which your sunglasses may not filter out. You should be able to find some special inexpensive filters, or discover other ways to see the eclipse with just minimal research.

Do Kids Need Orthotics?

Many children and adolescents have flat feet but have no joint pains.  There are others who develop knee and/or arch pain that limits their ability to enjoy certain activities such as running or playing sports.  If there is pain, and an obvious fallen arch, foot orthotics in the shoes, either over-the-counter or custom, may be warranted taking into account family history and degree of severity.  If there is no pain, yet there is an obvious fallen arch then the question is whether to correct or not.  Many medical professionals believe that fallen arches will adversely affect the knees and hips and lead to early arthritic pain.  Correcting the foot posture early on is then seen as a preventative measure for future knee and hip joint health.  If you are concerned with your child’s foot alignment it is worth discussing the options with a biomechanical professional.

Natural Treatments for ADHD

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the most common behavioural disorder in children, is being diagnosed in epidemic proportions. Approximately 11% of children 4-17 years of age are being diagnosed with ADHD. About 70% of these youngsters are given stimulant medications such as Ritalin. These medications can be helpful, but do not address the underlying causes of ADHD. From a naturopathic perspective, common causes include nutritional deficiencies, especially mineral deficiencies, fatty acid deficiencies, food sensitivities, and traumas to the developing brain by chemicals or stress. The brain is dependent on certain nutrients for optimal function. A hair mineral analysis is a quick way to assess mineral status. I love the supplement EMPowerplus Advanced by True Hope, available in most health food stores. Made up of 36 clinically proven vitamins, minerals, and amino acids and antioxidants, EMPowerplus Advanced is scientifically proven to effectively treat ADHD.

Ringing in the Ears

Do you hear noise in your ears that other people can’t hear? Annoying sounds, like ringing, buzzing, whistling, whooshing, or hissing? If so, you are not alone. Over 3 million Canadians suffer from tinnitus – a condition characterized by sounds that originate from within, rather than from outside of, your ears. Tinnitus takes on many forms. The most common “garden-variety” type produces soft-to-loud ringing, humming or rushing water sounds. Tonal tinnitus causes a constant chiming sound, like a musical note played over and over again. Pulsatile tinnitus produces sound that pulsates in time with one’s heartbeat. Mixed tinnitus causes multiple noises to be heard simultaneously. Objective tinnitus is extremely rare, and produces noise heard not only by the affected individual, but by others as well!

Financial Literacy Among Youth

In May of this year, the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada released information advising that Canadian youth (15-yearolds surveyed) are among the world’s top-performing students in terms of financial literacy, according to a report published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). On average, students with a bank account had higher financial literacy than students who didn’t. Four out of five Canadian students said if they did not have enough money to buy something they really wanted, they would either save up to buy it, or would not buy it. Notably, the findings indicated that discussing money matters with parents is associated with higher financial literacy; students who did so once or twice a week scored highest. Bravo, students! Reviewing our finances and discussing them with our significant others puts us in the know with respect to our money, and that’s always a good thing.

The Not-So-Great Outdoors

Many cat owners feel a bit guilty about keeping their cats inside and worry they are depriving them of their natural instincts. If this is you, take comfort in knowing that since cats have been domesticated, it is not essential that they experience the great outdoors to have a healthy life.  After all, their wonderful owners provide their food, water, and sleeping quarters! They no longer have to hunt for their supper nor a warm place to curl up for the night. If you allow your cat to experience the outdoors without restrictions, it can be very easy for it to pick up a disease, be exposed to poisonous substances, or get injured by a predator or a vehicle. Playing regularly with your cat and providing it with entertaining toys can easily satisfy your cat’s stalking instinct, keep it stimulated, and provide the exercise it needs to stay purr-fectly healthy and happy!
